3: The Empress
The Wheat in the foreground represents abundant growth, sustenance and fertility. It also shows that if you want to reap rewards, you must first plant seeds and care for them as you watch them grow to fruition.
The Pearl Necklace. Seven pearls, one for each of the seven ancient planets (Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, the Moon, the Sun and Saturn) and for each of the seven Chakras. A pearl is formed from a grain of sand or a piece of grit, an irritant to the oyster, this “problem” is repeatedly coated with the soft tissue within the oyster to make something prized.
The Stream, represents the stream of consciousness whose source is the robe of the High Priestess. The waterfall shows that this consciousness flows from a higher place.
The Crown has twelve stars, one for each sign of the zodiac, (remember the Fool’s belt).
The Red Triangle is the Greek letter Delta. A delta is the area of fertile land that is formed at the mouth of a river.
The Sceptre. The orb at the top is similar to the symbol for Venus. This staff indicates that she has authority, for all the “love and light” aspects of this card, if the Empress wants something done, she expects it to be so.
The Heart-Shaped Shield shows that the Empress lovingly protects her children. The dove is a Hebrew symbol for peace and a Christian symbol for the Holy Spirit.
The Crescent Moon. The Moon is the astrological attribute of the High Priestess. The Moons appearance in the Empress could be seen to show that the High Priestess, (the virgin), has evolved into the Empress, (the Mother).
Three, the Empress is numbered three. One and two added together to make the number of birth, a regenerative force. The number three is very prominent in mythology, three wishes, three charms, and good things happen in threes (also bad things).
